3 months in Snooky
« on: August 06, 2014, 12:31:46 AM »
OK well I'm not long back home after a 3 month stay in Sihanoukville i must say for a single guy in his 30's it's pretty much Disneyland for adults and i really have very little if nothing at all negative to report. I stayed in Charlie Harper's and this turned out to be a wise decision as the owner and the patrons are a friendly crazy lot and will point you in the way of whatever it is you might be looking to do or see and will happily include you in whatever is going on which is good if you happen to be travelling alone. I was very much aware of what i would describe as a " family " type atmosphere. So down to the nitty gritty as beer drinking becomes a major part of your life as does the company you keep while consuming it locations are important. Other than Charlie Harper's ( A cold beer was less 30 seconds walk from my bedroom :) ) i would recommend The Sky Bar on the dirt track to ochheuteal beach always a great atmosphere beer very cheap at 50 cent a go and a decent menu. Charnai who runs the place is great fun and will match you drink for drink and theres also a small card school here. Stevie C's bar in Golden lion Plaza is great for watching sport as the world cup was on during my stay we often arrived at 3 am to watch the footy and there was always a crowd and a good atmosphere as well as some nice accommodating lady's here also .Stevie and Neil the owners are both nice blokes. Zig Zac downtown similarly has some nice Lady's and usually a chilled atmosphere and nice for a quiet beer just up the street the Kangaroo Kitchen has some of the prettiest Lady's in town and is also good for a few beers. To be fair i think theres only one bar i didn't really like and was due to the attitude of the owner in general you find you are made welcome and it's very possible to go out and get pissed with 20 bucks and get home with some change in your pocket. Drinks are very cheap ( even lady drinks in most places are very reasonable ) and there is usually promotions etc to drag you in i advise " liking " the Sihanoukville events page on facebook as it will keep you up to date on a lot of whats going on.

Getting around is pretty easy i took to walking a lot to familiarise myself with the town ( much to the irritation of tuk tuk drivers who hate to see a white man on foot ) As there is a huge amount of tuk tuk and motos feel free to negotiate and if you are getting nowhere start to walk away this can help :) at certain areas at night ie Victory hill the tuk tuks have unite to over charge you however, so here's where getting the fone number of a driver you trust comes in handy if you meet a guy who is reasonable he will be happy to pick you up from where ever the approx. prices you should pay are discussed in another thread and unless your quite drunk you will usually be able to get those prices.

I'm not a big foody and i did most of my eating at Charlie Harper's where the food was great the price was right and the portions big. The steaks on Sunday were among my favourite's get there early they sell out the chili is also super !! But in general i found the food in most establishments very good with both local and western food on offer i am missing a good luk lak since i came Home. Again you can eat very well for very little wandering off the main tourist areas is a good idea just off the Golden Lion roundabout on turn before the one for the plaza is a great little Khmer place not many westerners and ridiculously cheap go check it out I'm sorry but i have no idea of the name walk about you will find it or someplace similar. Buying food to cook at home is easy hitting the market you can pretty much get anything you want huge bags of rice chicken fish etc etc if you are friendly with a local they will get it for you even cheaper if your too lazy/hungover for a lot of walking/negotiating then Samudera Supermarket is pretty good but in comparison quite expensive. If you get the chance to try some of Joels seafood do he will spend an evening at Harper's, Snookys and other bars and cook you the most amazing oysters you've ever had and is a decent bloke to have a beer with too.

I think Cambodian girls are amazing mostly they are beautiful giggly and nice to talk too. There is so many amazing looking girls in Sihanoukville you can fall in love about five times a day I'm not getting into whether they fall in love with you because your outlandishly handsome or have dollars in your wallet it depends on the girl and the situation have an open mind is all i can say. To be honest you need never have a lonely day or night while there if you are after a one night stand ( or several one night stands ) it's a matter of walking into a girly bar or even just down the beach as it wasn't high season while i was there girls would walk up and ask you to take them home for between 20 - 30 dollars ( with group rates available ;) ) If you are more serious minded and your butterfly days are over i think there is a lot of " nice " girls too and a lot of guys i met had lovely wives or long term girlfriends and were very happy so i guess it's really up to you.

Beaches.ochheuteal  beach the most popular beach pretty nice for a dip the water is shallow and cool on a warm day lots of options for bars/restaurants hawkers are a bit annoying at times but one gets used to them. Gets crazy at night sometimes down by the Dolphin shack ( backpacker HQ ) but not the dangerous place it's lately been pegged as

Otres beach is beautiful i made two trips its a decent moto drive from town but no crowds white sands crystal clear waters actually one of my favourite beaches in Asia. Try out rockstar bar also a few decent places for a happy pizza or a joint if that's your kind of thing

Victory Beach took a walk here from downtown not the nicest beach but nice views to take some pictures lots of hotels right on the sand and close to Queenco

Things i learned/ do's and dont's

Time here is funny its easy to lose track of days and even the time of day. Which can be bad when your trying to sneak a girl back in to your lodgings as Casper and i discovered. When your drinking all day 10pm CAN seem like 1 in the morning.

Measures of Alcohol are bigger. Whether your firing in a few whiskeys or being crazy and drinking Long Island Ice Tea's be aware your drinking bigger shots than your used to. This can lead to your legs deserting you when you leap from the bar stool or even worse lead you to falling asleep on the toilet pants around your ankles.

Pretty Woman is not an accurate depiction of prostitutes. Never EVER EVER pay a girl in advance...i don't care how high or drunk you are how hot she is what she promises to do...trust me it will not end well.

Visit the Kbal Chhay Waterfall it's a good day trip get one of the little shacks and eat some chicken it's the polar opposite of KFC i reckon the chicken is killed and cooked after you order it ! but its good fun and the waterfalls are impressive and when theres a crowd its a lot of fun, Highly recommended.

Get a Anchor beer and pour a Mekong whiskey in on top. Your welcome :)

If you can see one of Denny's fireworks displays check it out also very cool.

Drunkenly declaring you might get a tattoo may result in you waking up with one but as long as it's not on your forehead or anything it might actually be alright.

Near death experiences ie Moto/tuk tuk crashes/ near misses falling out of or out of moving vehicles drunk swimming huge over indulgences of alcohol become normal and are laughed about which is pretty much the opposite of how you deal with it at home.

Go boozing with Casper and the gang you will learn more in one night about your new home/holiday spot than months of reading websites or travel guides. Great bunch of mates to have.

If you buy a bracelet or get a massage on the beach you are doomed they must have a directory of people that are soft touches if you get one then the next day if you don't get one off another seller they will look at you sadly " but you buy from my friend "  damn...

If someone claims their BBQ ribs are better than sex possibly don't believe them as an honest man put it to me one day " they ARE better than sex if you were forced into sex at knifepoint " touche..

Bring condoms. And for the love of god use them. The ones you buy there are flimsy as hell ! The girl will rarely enough have any or insist you use one but for your own good do which brings me to my next point

Dehydration can make you ill and make certain parts of the anatomy sore but it's not an STD don't over react. Vindictive ex girlfriends may also claim you have STDs MIAOWWWWW

OK i could continue but i wont :) Great place an amazing time and am working on getting back asap !

Yeah barfine most places to the tune of 10 bucks usually if your on the beach you will run into a lot of freelancers cruising the bar however maby be a little more cautious with them as if your stuff gets nicked ect you have no come back . Well theres the LV club i guess thats pretty close to a niteclub / disco i've never been but i'm sure some of the blokes will fill you in.

Nice report, Kama Sutra condoms not so flimsy and strong as Durex.  For any related health issues see Doctor Gavin Scott in Phnom Penh, he has seen it all, including a Cambodian prison cell.

Well you won't regret staying there npmole thats for sure. Montana the second time i tried to buy condoms was off the girl in the little chemist shop next door to Charlie Harpers i asked for the condoms and she handed me some kind of vitamin tablets so we had a communication problem but i needed them in a hurry so i had to kind of mime what i was talking about in the end and she finally got my drift. On the occasions i went there after that ( usually for the same items ) she always gave me a look somewhere between disgust and disappointment. I think i'd be very good at charades.

Great report.

Nice to see "the family" is looking after the newbies. I guess Casper is the grandad?

I'll go to heaven for the climate and hell for the company.
