Much talk lately has been about the problems that are often encountered at the Cambodian Border when your attempting to purchase a Cambodian Tourist or Business Visa.

It's extremely common now to find the usual $20 & $25 USD charges for the respective Tourist and Business visa's are no more.

The prices can vary, but expect to be asked for around 30 to 35 dollars for a Tourist Visa and up to 50 dollars for a Business Visa. The actual cost on any paperwork you may have or see, simply does not come into the equation anymore.

You have the choice, pay or do not enter the country. No amout of arguing with change the minds of the Border Police, or so i'm told.

In my own case, excessive smiling and the display of a semi-barren wallet (the large notes safely hidden away) did the trick and reduced my Business Visa from the requested $50 down to $40.

Whilst I was there and exiting the country for my 20 minute excursion to Thailand, I overheard a young couple asking the Police for the number of the various Emabassies and Consulates in Cambodia. I guess they were going to register a complaint and get this 'miscarriage of justice' put right.

They were still there after I'd been to Thailand, returned, haggled my way down to $40 dollars and departed back to Koh Kong on my waiting Taxi.

My bet is that they paid the money.

Is this also happening at the airport or are still the "old" rates applicable?

No the Airport at Phnom Penh is 'hassle free'. You will only be asked to pay the standard 20 / 25 for the Tourist / Business Visa there.

To make things even easier you could get the eVisa online, costs an extra 5usd but you do go in the fast track queue at the Airport.

About 18 months ago I wrote to Cambodia Tourism bureau about this over charging for Visa at the land borders & they replied that this is "The Way" in Cambodia. In Other words Pay Up or Shut Up. IMO Cambodia still has the best Visa Situation in SEA.

To be honest, I agree with you Tony. At least in Cambodia you know it's simply money they want, they don't want to 'f*ck you around', they just want a little extra pocket money.

I have no problem with paying the extra, though i've heard of many people that stick to their 'rights' and argue for 4 hours before eventually giving in and paying up.

Life's to short to worry about a 'one-off' extra 10 bucks. I think the more people that are aware of the 'scam', the better. Maybe then they'll be more accepting when it comes to the border.

They'll probably try something to be sure, but at least it'll make them work a bit harder! Smiley
