I heard a while ago that the Thai police were often waiting to meet buses from Cambo borders  at the Ekami (sic?) bus stop in Bkk, armed with urine tests. Anyone returning a pos for cannabis was basically threatened with a stay at the police station, and possible expulsion, unless they paid a "fine" of around 10 000 baht, ($300). If they didn't have that much on them, the cops took ALL the currency, (of any type), they had.

So basically, a good 'ol Thai shakedown!

Today a friend crossed on foot from Koh Kong into Thailand at Had Lek. No issues at all exiting Cambo, but across the gate, there were the Thai cops with the urine kits.
He was waved through as their tent was full at the time, but he saw quite a few stopped for a test in the 20 minutes he waited for his van to leave for Trat. Ominously there was a police truck parked there, and he saw 3 barangs loaded into it!

As most would be aware, cannabis traces are stored in your body fat for at least 3 weeks, sometimes up to 5 weeks, and WILL return a pos piss test.

I am not expressing an opinion on cannabis here - just letting you know that, at least today, the risk was certainly there at the border.

If true that's fuckin disgraceful.
As if the Thais have any business knowing what I get up to on my holiday in Cambodia.
I could be shooting up heroin for a month in Cambo, as long as I don't have any on me when i enter Thailand it's none of their business.

Cunts.

Sounds like the US DEA has been spreading around money and training again. Wish the would mind their own business and/or be disbanded.

so wait, if you are a US citizen crossing the border at this point they will test you and extort you, even if you havent been in thailand for months and arent in possession of anything?

and fwiw at least 3 weeks isnt really true, it varies from person to person, and there are ways to get it out of your system quicker, mostly working out/sweating a lot

and there are ways to mess with the tests, like drinking A LOT of water right before

not saying its foolproof, but if you quit 5 days before the test, work out every day in between particularly in this humidity, and then drink as much water as you can on the way to the test you got a great shot at passing

Can You Fool the Test?

Although many tips are published on websites and magazines of marijuana decriminalization advocates on how to beat a marijuana drug test, most have proven to be urban legends. Some techniques include:
Washing Yourself Out - This entails drinking a lot of water or liquids and urinating several times before the test, then taking vitamin B-2 to add color back to the urine. Although this may lower the percentage of THC found in the urine by diluting it, it will not totally eliminate THC metabolites.
Using Drug Screening Agents - Some companies sell various substances and herbal teas that are allegedly capable of "cleaning" the body's system of traces of marijuana. There is little evidence that any of them actually work. The catch is most of them have to be used over an extended period of time, during which the body will naturally eliminate THC from the system anyway.
Tampering With the Test - This involves adding something to the urine to contaminate the sample. There are tales of using Visine, bleach, salt or detergent to urine, but these items are easily detected by the lab. Several commercial products are used as urine test adulterants, but none are 100% foolproof. And all of them can be detected by the laboratory, if a separate test is run for them.

Cannabis binds with fat in the body and can be detected for up to 3 months in the urine (sometimes more) of habitual users. That is one of the reasons that smack is preferred in UK prisons as it is away in 3 days ie a weekend.
Personally I would challenge the accuracy of the tests if challenged, they are rarely 100% accurate on dip and read and the police probably know this.
Not my problem but I do know a bit about this.
Another good reason to avoid the fascist Thais.

Fwiw, my mate said it looked like a temporary portable setup. A tent where the cops took the 'chosen' for their tests, and several officers outside on card tables, armed with forms.

So I suppose rather than being a permanent fixture, they will hike it around the various border crossings?

As far as fooling tests, i'm afraid greedy corrupt police could also play that game. By announcing a false positive! What is one to do in that situation, other than pay up?

Just another reason after 31 years of traveling to Thailand, I stay away from the place and can't stand their governments attitude. Of course the US government and its Drug Enforcement Agency had a lot to do with the drug part of it, and the Thai's having more disposable income and not dependent on tourists is a part. "Come stay for two weeks, spend all your money and go home please! We don't want you living here anymore."

No my friend, it ain't bullshit. Thai cops have been piss testing in clubs for ages. The scam at the Ekamai terminal began about a year ago, and has affected 2 friends of a friend who had returned from Snooky by bus(es). Do some searches online, and it's mentioned.

As for the recent incidence at the Had Lek border - the mate who called me about it is reliable.

What's China got to do with it?

It's nothing more than a Thai police scam. "Money for nothing, and the chips are free", as far as they're concerned.
