The Small Green Guesthouse, Sihanoukville

A few days back I was informed by a good friend in town that the Small Green Guesthouse here in Sihanoukville, was providing an ‘all you can eat’ style Buffet on friday nights. Never having visited this establishment, but being aware of it’s excellent reputation for service, I decided to pay a visit.

I arrived at 19:15, and took a seat at the bar. The food was already set out and the room was filled with wonderful aromas. The owner, Raymond, is Swedish and much of the food was in the Swedish style with casseroles and minced beef patties in wonderfully rich sauces.

I would say that just about everyones palate would be catered for, as there were vegaterian dishes, rice and even a Spagetti Bolognese on offer as well as the Swedish selection. This is by far the best Buffet style meal i’ve had for a very long time, easily the best i’ve enjoyed in Asia. Generally they consist of fried chicken drumsticks and bit of barbequed pork, but not at the Small Green Guesthouse. Very, very impressed.

The service too, set levels that not many other venues can attain. Very friendly staff and Raymond himself is an excellent host, greeting every customer that came with a warm welcome.

Anchor beer is 1.25 dollars per can and the Buffet is only 3 dollars. I don’t know how long this offer will run for, but for the time being it’s running every friday from 7pm. Surely the best deal in town!

It was only a matter of time before Raymond realised that he was seriously ‘undercharging’!

Yes, the cost of the fantastic buffet at The Small Green Guesthouse has been increased to $4.50 dollars as of last friday …… still a bargain in my book.

Price has now gone up to $5.50 ….. to be honest, this puts it at the top end now.

The last time I attended, a few weeks back now, I didn’t get to the queue as promptly as I should have and wasn’t at all impressed with the offerings that were left. It didn’t seem to be particularly busy, so i’m guessing they had really cut back on the amount of food prepared.

    A shame.

Interesting in LOW season I asked for a room with a fan at $10.00. Raymond told me he could not accomodate for he was tired of loosing money. A fan room at $10? Rally now? I had payrf the $15 other times and always ate the food…. seems like a stupid move on his part… especially when he had 8 empty rooms.

Have to say that a few things have changed at The Small Green Guesthouse …… the Friday night buffet is now $8 dollars, though it does include a ‘free’ beer.

Additionally though, a number of people have felt that both good service and the friendliness of the event have all but gone.

Based on recent experience, I really can’t back up Raymonds actions in anyway.
