Oktoberfest 2008 at the Freedom Bar

Freedom-Bar-HotelThe Freedom Bar and Hotel has again hosted the Sihanoukville Oktoberfest this year, over the 24th, 25th and 26th of October. Good sized crowds attended and much beer was enjoyed!

Sadly, for me, there were a couple of setbacks though …….. the advertised German Oompah Band didn’t attend and, since the event was sponsored by Angkor Beer, Anchor Beer was not available over the full three days. This didn’t stop me drinking, but I certainly drank less than if Anchor had been served!

With the ‘no show’ of the Bavarian Band, Stefan himself was forced to step in at the last minute. He is a capable and confident performer and sings a range of popular western and German songs. Not quite an Oompah band, he nevertheless kept the party spirit going from 5pm to 10pm and played to a friendly and appreciative crowd.

After 10pm, Route66 took over the stage with their usual repertoire of classic american rock, to be honest on the first night I took this as my ‘cue’ to leave, however on the following nights I stayed and have to say that I actually enjoyed their performance. On both nights, reportedly, I was even seen dancing …… though due to an excess of Angkor Beer I have little recolection of this fact!

Despite the general ‘tone’ of Sihanoukville being extremely quiet at the moment, the Freedom Bar was very busy across the three nights. It was obvious that they had lost a good portion of the daytime trade due to the pool tables being unavailable, but i’m hoping that Stefan was able to recoup a ‘profit’ from this event.

It obviously takes great effort to organise something like this and, despite a couple of setbacks, I’d put the event under the ’success’ category. Kudos to Stefan and the team at the Freedom Bar and Hotel.
