Got back into the habit of spending way too much time on the beach, so should really mention a few of the changes.
Now, i’m NOT a beach person. The only reason I go is because it’s the only place in town after 2 or 3am! It used to be that the Dolphin Shack had absolutely zero competition, it really was the only show in town after that time. Now though it really does have some stiff competition.
My new personal favourite, is Jack’s Shack. Owned by a young Belgian guy called ‘Jack’ (surprisingly enough!), but managed by a Brit (and local ‘charactor’) who goes by the name of ’shifty’. This place, being right next door to the Dolphin is certainly taking some of the limelight, and customers.
The two guys running the place are extremely friendly, love to drink and aren’t shy when it comes to getting the atmosphere going. Guaranteed a great time around the bar, dance area or pool table. If you want to simply chill, move out to the beach and take a comfy seat at the waters edge. The music is loud, but easily bearable even at my age!
Nep House (Eden), too be honest I don’t drink here anymore. I did try it out a few times last high season, but I found the place very cliquey and not too friendly. That said, it was busy most of the time. This year there’s a few things that need mentioning. The first is that, apparently, they are selling a beer for 1500 riel, and it comes with a free ’shot’. Don’t know what the shot is, but at that price I don’t suppose it really matters! This offer is available from 9 – 10pm. Surely going to be popular with the backpacker crowd!
The second thing is that the place nearly burned down the other night, so the reports say. Didn’t see the extent of the damage, but there were fears of the fire spreading to the other bars. Place is still open though, so things can’t be that bad.
Session’s Bar, on the left side of the Dolphin Shack (if you’re facing the sea) is another popular place. It tends to blow a little ‘hot and cold’, but on one of their ‘event’ nights there wont be a seat on the beach. They sure do pull them in! There’s a ‘live’ DJ, an outside food cart selling the usual late night fodder and a lively atmosphere. Fun place, but more for the younger crowd, the music just isn’t to my own taste, not saying that as a negative though.
That’s about it really, there are of course many others though most aren’t guaranteed to be open every night, even in the high season. They are generally quieter or simply lack the ‘buzz’ of those mentioned above.
