While this is unfortunate occurrence, there are means to protect equipment from all but a massive direct strike. They include directing the current away from the equipment using lightning rods and grounds, and grounded breakdown protectors across incoming power lines. I am coming to Snookyville at the end of august to retire. I know a fair amount about doing that. Maybe a second occurrence can be avoided.

it is a real disaster for the Social Communication Section of the Don Bosco Technical School.
Many efforts were put in the building of the audio/video production studios , which were financed by Dutch donors. After 3 months of works in progress and planning, the site was completely destroyed by an electrical storm . Luckily enough, the 40+ computers in the section , which hosts the Secretarial Course , were not damaged by the bolt.
In Cambodia, rule nr.1 is "unplug any electrical appliance during a storm".
